1929 Series Type #1 Five Dollar THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA Serial C000325A
CHARTER #7511 State College is a home rule municipality in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is a college town, dominated economically, culturally, and demographically by the presence of the University Park campus of The Pennsylvania State University. WE ARE PENN STATE!
On December 15, 1904 – prior to being in its own building – “The First National Bank opened its doors for business,” says Wayland Fuller Dunaway’s 1946 History of the Pennsylvania State College.
In 1911, the bank moved into its permanent home from “one room of a residence on College Avenue,” reports the 1925 “Our Town” booklet of the State College Chamber of Commerce. “Before that, our banking was done in Bellefonte.”
So, this was State College’s first First National Bank. The multi-branched bank currently operating under that name was originally Peoples National Bank, situated where the downtown branch is today, around the corner at 117 South Allen Street. Peoples was the second town bank, organized April 19, 1923.
Track and Price lists #18 small size notes. Large Size #13……. with three distinct wallet-type folds, bright in appearance, we graded this one Very Fine to Extra Fine. Original kept note. It’s a nice overall piece despite the typical quirky cutting from the sheet it came from.
*There has not been a $5.00 small size offered since 2009. Only two others exist on TYPE #1 $5.00’s. Just one for TYPE #2. All very fine condition.
