1875 Series $2 LAZY DUECE TREMONT NATIONAL BANK OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS. SERIAL 3668

CHARTER #625

The Tremont National Bank of Massachusetts, chartered in 1864, was a significant player in the national bank note era. It printed a total of $2,814,750 worth of national currency, with over $1,000,000 face value. The bank’s operations spanned from 1864 to 1898, a period of 35 years.

One of the #27 Large Size notes in the Census for this Suffolk County Bank. #0 Small Size

Third-party graded P.C.G.S #40 Extra Fine, showcasing vibrant inks and a distinct red seal overprint. The “New England Trim” is not a flaw but a historical reflection of the region’s banking practices. The margins have been trimmed; the $2 Lazy Deuce term refers to the practice of bank employees trimming note edges to fit cash boxes originally designed for obsolete notes. This was a common practice in Boston and Massachusetts, extending to banks as far as Bangor, Maine, and Upstate New York. Three pinholes are present in the center of this example. Only seven $2 Lazy Deuce Nationals are documented for this charter out of the 27 Large Size notes in total. Census records indicate just two 1875 Series have been sold since 2011. Sharp-looking note for being mid-grade.
