Description
Black Eagle Set | Complete 1899 Silver Certificate Collection
Black Eagle Set Preserved for Over a Century
This remarkable Black Eagle Set consists of ten 1899 $1 Silver Certificates representing every even-numbered position from R10A through R100A. Originally removed from Bureau of Engraving and Printing packs over a century ago, these notes remained together as a complete presentation set through multiple generations of ownership.
While individual Black Eagle notes regularly appear on the market, complete matched groups from a single block are seldom offered. The survival of this set as one intact collection makes it a truly special opportunity for the advanced currency collector.
Black Eagle Set Provenance and History
The history behind this group is impressive. In 2003, this set was observed at the Memphis Paper Money Show at the table of Harry Jones. Along with approximately fifty additional Black Eagle notes, it was purchased by renowned collector Jhon E. Cash.
At the time, both major currency grading services were still in their early stages. The notes were subsequently certified by PCGS Banknote in 2005 and remain housed in their original holders with the desirable CLCT Collectors Universe Designation.
Before entering the Jhon E. Cash Collection, the set had been preserved for decades by legendary collector Zollie Kelman. USA Rare recently acquired a portion of the John E. Cash Collection, allowing this historic group to be offered once again.
Black Eagle Set Featuring Rare Fr. 236M Mule Notes
Aan added bonus to this Black Eagle Set is the inclusion of five scarce Fr. 236M Mule notes and five standard Fr. 236 notes.
The Fr. 236M variety was created when back plates intended for the earlier Fr. 235 issue were re-used during production. These mule notes are far scarcer than their regular counterparts and remain highly sought after by specialists in large-size United States currency. In May of 2025, a lone Top Population P.M.G #67 realized $7800 at Heritage Auctions.
Several examples in this group are certified at the coveted Gem Uncirculated level, including two Fr. 236M Mule notes graded PCGS 66 PPQ.

Condition and Eye Appeal
Every note in this Black Eagle Set is 100% original and displays exceptional eye appeal. The notes exhibit bright paper, bold inks, strong embossing, and pleasing centering throughout the group.
Grades range from Choice Uncirculated to Gem Uncirculated, creating an impressive visual presentation that few surviving Black Eagle holdings can match.
Why This Black Eagle Set Is Important
This offering represents far more than ten individual notes. It is a complete surviving set of all even-numbered positions from the R-A block that has remained together for well over one hundred years.
Furthermore, the combination of five Fr. 236 notes and five scarce Fr. 236M Mule notes provides collectors with both major varieties represented within a single historic group. Finding an intact large-size currency set with documented provenance, early PCGS certification, and outstanding originality is exceptionally difficult.
Offered only as a complete unit, this historic Black Eagle Set stands among the finest presentation groups of 1899 $1 Silver Certificates available to collectors today.
