P.M.G #55

Description

The FR-2086-G 1999 Series Twenty-Dollar Federal Reserve note from the Chicago District is a rare piece, featuring an overprint on the back of a first-generation big head design. While small head designs from the 1928 to 1995 Series are plentiful, quality control improvements—especially with the adoption of the LEPE printing press in the 2009 Series—have greatly reduced errors. Only a few examples exist from the 1996–2001 Series compared to the small head era, with the last similar find being a 2004 Series $20. The most recent overprint on a newer style note was a 2006 Series $50 FRN with a reverse overprint, documented in Stephen Sullivan’s 2nd Edition Encyclopedia, which sold for $6,000 in 2022. This particular note is graded by P.M.G. as #55 Very Choice About Uncirculated, with no comments on the holder. A faint trace of stain from possible printing operations appears along the top margin of both sides, and minimal handling has preserved its high grade—likely discovered by a teller in a pack of notes. *2005/2008 Original P.M.G Graded holder.
