Description

FR‑1980‑E 1988A $5 Federal Reserve Note from the Richmond District features a dramatic second‑print misalignment error. The first printing was applied normally, but during the face‑printing stage the sheet was pushed out of position, causing the design to shift and overlap into the area of the adjacent note. As a result, approximately 15–20% of the next note appears on the right side of this piece.

After drying, the sheet was correctly aligned for the third printing, leaving the Treasury seal and serial numbers perfectly centered. This confirms a true face‑print shift — one of the most visually striking and collectible error types.

With a normal first print, a misaligned second print, and a properly aligned overprint, this note clearly displays the full sequence of the production error. A bold, eye‑catching example ideal for collectors of major U.S. currency printing errors.
