Description

Fr-883A 1914 Series Five Dollar Federal Reserve Note from the Kansas City District, serial number J40000004A, the ultimate super radar serial on a large-size FRN. The solid zero middle radar makes it especially notable.

It’s one of only #47 known two-digit radars listed in the Mike Abramson Special Serial Number Guidebook, and just one of two 1914 $5 FRNs with a two-digit radar—the other being a FR-871 1914 $5 FRN G63333336B, which sold at Lyn Knight in 2006 for $2,530. These are the only two large-sized Five Dollar FRNs with such a radar, with no examples in other denominations. With that said, the radars in the census are all listed as EIGHT-DIGIT serial numbers. This would pertain to the rarest combination of serial numbers to exist. Not a four-digit, six-digit radar, but instead eight.

Graded by P.C.G.S as #63PPQ Choice Uncirculated with premium paper quality, it shows only a touch of handling. A droplet of excess ink on the back of the note is considered by P.C.G.S to be part of the printing. Bright white paper with excellent centering, a striking serial number for this type, and autographed by Andrew William Mellon. This was surely a presentational note, given the autograph in our opinion. Previous large-size radars of the same type have realized $3000.00 and up. Here’s a great trophy radar.
