Description

1882 Series $10 note from THE CENTERVILLE NATIONAL BANK OF MARYLAND, SERIAL 1204

BROWN BACK – CHARTER #2341

This is one of the #6 large-sized notes recorded in the census for this Queen Anne’s County bank. There are 7 small-sized notes. This particular note is new to the census, having been passed down through many family members before making its way to the recent Gettysburg, PA show.

Centreville’s name was derived from the relocation of the county seat in 1782 from Queenstown to a more central part of the county.

Saint Paul’s Parish was established on the site that would later become known as Centreville, Maryland. It was almost 100 years later, in 1782, that the Maryland State Assembly passed an Act to relocate both the courthouse and all government functions of the county to Centreville from Queenstown, making Centreville the new county seat.

However, it took a decade for the appropriate land to be acquired and for the change to take place. A plantation called Chesterfield was chosen as the land to use for the new town, which would hold the county’s courthouse. Once the town and courthouse were completed, on the first of June 1796, the county court, “ordered [the courthouse] to be ‘taken, held and deemed to be the proper Court House of Queen Anne’s County’”.

We graded this note as Very Fine to Extra Fine, featuring bold print on both sides, all-original condition, and baby blue ink pen signatures. It’s a real showstopper, with only six large-size examples known for all types. ZERO offerings for a brown back example. One listed in the T/P census as a fine but never offered. New Discovery for this Queen Annes County Bank.

In January 2026, two small-size examples of this charter sold at H/A for $4,148 each. This is one of the nicest large-size notes from this bank and a rare find among chartered banks.
