About Pottstown, Pennsylvania
Pottstown is a borough in Montgomery County. It was originally laid out in 1752–53 as Pottsgrove, named for founder John Potts. The name changed to Pottstown when the borough was incorporated in 1815.
The town sits along the Schuylkill River, about 29 miles south of Allentown and 40 miles northwest of Philadelphia. As of the 2020 census, Pottstown has a population of 23,433.
Pottstown’s Early Industry
Pottstown grew on land originally deeded to William Penn. Early settlers included Germans, Swedes, and English families. After the first iron forge was built in 1714, the town’s development became closely tied to iron and steel production.
The Potts family, known for their iron‑working skills, built a forge and established their home near the Manatawny Creek. In 1761, John Potts founded the town on part of his 995‑acre property. Pottstown later became home to the Pottstown Roller Mill, one of the oldest mills in the country.
The arrival of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad in 1838 helped the town expand. Steel from Pottstown was used in major American projects, including the Panama Canal and the Golden Gate Bridge.
