Description

This 1988A Series One Dollar Federal Reserve Note comes from the Dallas District (K‑11) and shows a rare black‑ink misalignment error. Collectors often pause when they see this type of shift. The direction isn’t the confusing part — it’s the fact that only the black ink moved while the green ink stayed perfectly aligned.

This happens when the mechanical overprint assembly that applies the black serial numbers and the black Federal Reserve seal loosens or strikes the sheet at an angle. The green Treasury seal and green serial components sit on a separate assembly, so they remain in place. That’s why the district numbers drop to the bottom and the black seal shifts downward, while the green elements look normal.

We graded this note Choice Uncirculated. It came straight from the original pack and was saved for years. The paper is crisp, the color is bold, and the surfaces remain clean. The centering is solid for an error of this type, and the misalignment shows clearly without any distractions.

This is an excellent example of a mechanical overprint shift, and it makes a strong conversation piece for any error‑note collection. The visual impact is immediate, and the cause is fascinating once you understand the printing mechanics behind it.
