Historical Background
Settlers reached the Stewartstown area by 1750, during the long border dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania. The Mason–Dixon Line survey of 1767 finally settled the issue.
By 1777, a well‑traveled road linked York and Baltimore, and today’s Main Street follows that early route. Around 1812, local farmers began shaping a new village in Hopewell Township. Early buildings included homes, a wheel‑ and furniture‑making shop, a store, and a tavern. Anthony Stewart, who owned the workshop, served as village clerk and hosted community meetings in his shop.
The town cycled through several names — Meads town, Mechanicsburg, and Guilford — before Stewart and Judge Adam Ebaugh secured the official name Stewartstown on March 24, 1832.
This note offers a sharp, appealing example from a rare York County charter with a tiny surviving population — a strong addition to any Pennsylvania national collection
