Description
FR-1600 1928 Series One Dollar Silver Certificate with a complete solid 9’s serial number E99999999A is one of only three known for this series—now a fourth, as it wasn’t previously in the census. Originally bought decades ago and sold privately, it surfaced at a local Delaware show we attended this January. Often called the unicorn of fancy serial numbers, its eight nines make it highly sought after, fetching anywhere from $20,000 to $50,000 depending on series and grade.
Modern currency doesn’t usually have this serial number unless it’s a rare BEP error, like one 2003A Series $1 or three 2003 $2 FRNs that slipped through on uncut sheets. It could also be from premium set notes, such as the 1995 or 1999 Series $10 bills the Bureau released to the public in the late 2000s as District sets. This note grades P.C.G.S. #63PPQ Choice Uncirculated with premium paper quality—bright, though slightly off-center, to be considered a gem. It remains a true conversational piece from one of the earliest silver certificate block runs.
