Fr-846 1914 Series Five Dollar Federal Reserve Note from the Boston District, with serial number A33333333A featuring solid 3’s. This is the first and earliest known eight-digit solid serial number printed on a Federal Reserve Note. The 1914 series $5 note from the Boston District was the first of its kind issued for general circulation after the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. To date, there are only five total eight-digit solid serial numbers across all 1914 Series, Denominations, Districts of Federal Reserve Notes: Four $5 notes, One $20 note, and Zero for Red Seal FRNs. This is the ONLY A-A Block FRN known to exist.
This example is third-party graded P.M.G #40EPQ Extra Fine, boasting exceptional paper quality—bright and seemingly uncirculated, one center fold, with a touch of handling in the paper, not noticeable in the P.M.G holder. The A-A block is especially striking for this type. Large-size eight-digit solid serial numbers have become highly desirable among collectors, and this piece truly brings the Variety of Federal Reserve notes to a very high level.
In 2008, we sold a complete 1899 Series $1 S.C. Black Eagle set featuring Eight-Digit Solid Serial Numbers, including the Nine-Digit Serial Number, for $190,000 on this website. It’s pictured in Mike Abramson’s Special Serial Guidebook on pages 79–81. In recent years, Eight-Digit Solid Serial Numbers in uncirculated condition have ranged from $12,000 to $100,000, while some circulated examples have still brought over $12,000. Values vary depending on the series, denomination, and variety.
