Description

The Fr-2175-B 1996 Series One Hundred Dollar Federal Reserve note from the New York District features an upside-down overprint applied to the front of sheet #32, fed into the press at a 180-degree angle. What sets this note apart is that, for the first newly designed big hundred, the black Federal Reserve Seal remains printed on the face design rather than being included in the overprint stage. Otherwise, it would appear on the reverse side of the note. This is believed to be the last inverted overprint on a One Hundred Dollar Denomination. Since the introduction of the cope press in the 2009 Series, there haven’t been any inverted seals and serial numbers. Recently graded by P.C.G.S., this note achieved a GEM level grade of #65PPQ, with premium paper quality, a dark face print, sharp overprint, and razor-sharp edges. A similar note sold for $1,100 in 1998, while recent public auctions in the last two years have seen prices trending between $3,400 and $3,700. It’s been a long time since one of these has been in stock, making it a truly remarkable example.
